Most of Microsoft Windows users are freaked out when they hear Linux. Maybe because they’re unfamiliar with it, think it’s hard to use, or just it’s too different from their working  environment. That was long ago, now more linux distro are user friendly like ubuntu. Totally different, it’s widely used, have good community that keeps on growing. But still its a headache to do the installation, even harder if you’re thinking of Dual Booting. Why would you go through all that when there is an easier way to try linux ?

Wikipedia says

” VMware software provides a completely virtualized set of hardware to the guest operating system. VMware software virtualizes the hardware for a video adapter, a network adapter, and hard disk adapters. The host provides pass-through drivers for guest USB, serial, and parallel devices. ”

It means, everything you physically have on your computer will also be available in your Virtual Machine( guest operating system). A complete clone of your pc on the screen.

Ok, enough with definitions. I’m here to show you How VMware can help you try an operating system safely. No partitioning, no dual booting, no adding new hardwares. Just stick to what you already have. Now, create a new virtual machine. Here’s what do you need to know in creating a new virtual machine with VMware :

  • Operating System you’re planning to use
  • How much CPU/ MEMORY usage would you like on it. If you’re planning to have just one virtual machine than this is not a big matter.
  • How much Disk Size you want

Done ? Next … Start your virtual machine now

Operating System Installation

You can either use physical cd/dvd or an ISO image. Both works perfectly. If you’re using ISO image, remove the image after installation. For the installation, it’s a normal installation like you did on real machines .  If you’re just not familiar with OS installations, its o.k, you can just proceed. This won’t harm your Host OS if you made mistakes in Guest OS installation process. This is where you can learn, which is good.

Ubuntu Installation

Ubuntu Installation on VMware using ISO image

Disk space

It does eats up a lot of disk space so you better have some. These are disk spaces i’ve selected for my Virtual Machines and the folder size for each machine on physical disk.

  • 4 Gb for Server 2003 = 2+ Gb on physical disk
  • 4 Gb for Ubuntu 10 = 2+ Gb on physical disk
  • 8 Gb for BackTrack4 = 5+ Gb on physical disk

Networking

VMware allows your virtual machine to have a unique IP address. You need to bridge your virtual machine network adapter to your physical network adapter. Set this before you start your Virtual Machine. Go to Edit > Virtual Network Editor

VMware Networking

VMware Networking Setup

If you’re using windows(guest os) then it will get an IP from DHCP server instantly but if you’re using linux you need to configure it first.

Internet Surfing

Internet Surfing

Did you notice the tabs. Yes, you can have multiple guest OS installed, not just one. You can even run them all at the same time if you want but only if you have a fast machine. Actually, this is how i try any operating system before i actually install it on real machine.

So, that’s it. I’m done. Good luck !

VMware, pot simply, i don’t know why people bother. I used to use linux but went back to windows simply because things don’t just work without having to tweak. I don’t like the idea of having to install seperate (not even legal) codecs just to play an mp3 file.

Linux for beginners, it’ll make you busy.

Peter, some public & private sector here are starting to use ubuntu. Maybe someday windows is not an option for office use. It means trouble for windows addict. Like it or not, they need to learn to use Linux.

Software like VMware really is a good option to try it, they’re still on windows and they can explorer Linux too.

      * Last time i was on Linux, I spent the whole night looking for video player . Unluckily i didn’t use VMware. Installed on my harddisk. ;)
