This is just a quick guide to setup a mail server in your network using SmarterMail version 6. Thou it’s not quiet a good choice using this software because of user limitation in free version, but it’s a great software. So, here’s my network diagram.

Network Diagram
Installation for SmarterMail quite straight forward so i’m not going to write anything bout it, just remember username and password for control panel login, that’s all. After installation STOP, relax, close all windows.
1. Open Configure SmarterMail Web Server from your start menu, change server listen port to 80 (default is 9998). For ‘IP’, you better use ‘All IP Addresses’ otherwise you’ll be biting your nails (means you have no way to login to Server’s Control Panel)

Configure SmarterMail Web Server
2. Login to Control Panel with your web browser, http://localhost

SmarterMail Control Panel
“ Wait, a server must have a Static IP . I know you knew, just checking. Ok, you are authorized to proceed “
3. Create a new domain ( in this guide, semutapi.net ) and select listen IP. All created domains will be listed in Domains > All Domains.

Create New Domain
4. Open Menu : Domains > All Domains to manage your domain. Create users, aliases, mailing list, spam filter and all.

Create users
5. Now you can try login in, check your mail using web based interface. Browse to your server ( http://mail.semutapi.net ).

Check mail with web browser
This is what it looks like.

6. Now try using a mail client software ( outlook ), setup like this.

Using mail client (outlook)
I’ve used default port for pop3 and smtp.
There’s many more Mail Server software out there, but maybe you dont have enough time to check it all out. So, i would like to suggest MailEnable & PegasusMail or Mercury.
I’m not a professional in this, just want to share what i’ve tried to all beginners. I’m just enjoying my boring times. Yeah ! … i’m still a little bit bored. Maybe a sleep would help.

@immy, thanks.
” SmarterMail Free edition is limited to 10 mailboxes on a single domain, and includes all the functionality of SmarterMail Enterprise edition. ”
good stuff always comes with limitation. Hope someday they’ll make it for 50 users coz I like it too.
